2010-07-29  Teenager Arrested for Garforth Burglary

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary at the home of seventy two year old Garforth man George Turnbull, who suffered serious head injuries during the raid. The 17 year old youth was arrested on Monday night and is currently in police custody. A second suspect is being sought by the police  

 

2010-07-28  Pensioner Beaten by Burglars

Seventy two year old George Turnbull was violently attacked in his home in Oak Grove Garforth by two burglars in the early hours of Sunday morning. Neighbours spotted the intruders and called the police but they had left by the time the police arrived. Mr Turnbull is poorly but stable in hospital.  

 

2010-07-28  Town Beat Hartlepool in Pre-season Friendly

Garforth Town beat first division Hartlepool United 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at the Genix stadium. Chimbunka and Hotchkiss gave Town a 2-0 lead before Behan pulled one back for Hartlepool from the penalty spot late in the game 

 

2010-07-27  School Stunned by Untimely Death

A memorial service was held on Saturday 17th July 2010 at The Bible Believers Fellowship Church in Pickering to celebrate the life of Garforth teacher Wayne Jenkins and was attended by many students, ex-students,colleagues, friends and family. Mr Jenkins began his career at Garforth Community College in 1981 as a Youth tutor and ran several very successful Youth Clubs. He was appointed Head of Year 11 in 1983 and in 2003 became Director of the Excellence Centre and was responsible for the Aim Higher scheme.  

 

2010-07-27  Church Helps Out

In support of local and international organisations, St Marys Garforth PCC has donated £200 to homeless charity Simon on the Streets, £200 to international Christian charity Hope Africa and £100 to St Marys Youth Theatre Group  

 

2010-07-24  Fire Warning from Police

Over recent weeks police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have had to deal with a number of fires in the area including a camp fire in woodland that had been left unattended. It had not been fully extinguished and had started to set fire to very dry grass and bushes nearby. In a second incident, a fire was started near the base of an electricity pole. Authorities are still investigating this incident. If you are camping, please make sure that you do not start fires in protected woodland as you may damage local wildlife with the fire. If you are authorised to start a fire, make sure that before you depart, the fire is completely extinguished.  

 

2010-07-23  Bin Spies in LS25

LS25 was one of eleven postal districts where Leeds City Council has been analysing the content of black and green waste bins. A private company was appointed to carry out waste composition analysis from 250 homes across the city. A council spokeswoman stressed that the survey was anonymous, no personal data was gathered and the results cannot be traced back to individual households

Timothy Bean, head of Great Preston C of E Primary School and Jean Lamb from Ninelands Primary School were two of 13 retiring headmasters honoured by Education Leeds in a reception at the Civic Hall.  

 

2010-07-21  Charity Car Wash

Fire fighters at Garforth fire station are holding a charity car wash from 1pm to 6pm on Saturday 24th July in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity. Advance booking is not required.  

 

2010-07-20  MP Calls Public Meeting Over Travellers Problem

MP Alec Shelbrooke has called a public meeting to discuss the traveller problem in Garforth. At the meeting at East Garforth Primary School on Saturday 24th July 10am he will present a proposal to install large decorative boulders around vulnerable land in Garforth which will prevent access to caravans and cars. Senior police officers and local councillors have also been invited to explain to residents why it took so long to clear the Ash Lane site
