2008-11-21  Blues Brothers in Sherburn

On Saturday 6th December the Blues Brothers tribute band “Bruvvas Blue” are returning to Sherburn White Rose Sports & Social Club. Tickets are available at £5.00 each and include supper. 

 

2008-11-20  Athelstan School Wins the Double

Athelstan Primary School has been awarded Healthy Schools Status after meeting the criteria of the National Healthy Schools programme. The school has also renewed it’s Basic Skills Quality Mark, which is awarded to schools that provide quality teaching in Literacy and Numeracy, and by meeting the ten criteria set out by the Basic Skills Agency.Both awards are granted for three years and Athelstan is looking forward to building on the good standards it has already achieved to ensure that they maintain the awards.  

 

2008-11-19  Idol Student in Sherburn

Sherburn High School student Abigail Smith has beaten off 10,000 people and earned herself a place in the National Grand Final of UK IDOL 2008. She will be singing at the Guildhall in Portsmouth on 29 November 2008. Guest stars on the night are Razorlight, Will Young & Jools Holland. 

 

2008-11-12  Volunteers Wanted at Sherburn Drop-In

Volunteers are required for the Sherburn in Elmet Youth Drop-In which is held at the Eversley Park Centre in Sherburn on Friday evenings between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm.The Drop-In provides a safe environment for youths to come to the centre to socialise and take part in activities such as arts and crafts, drama workshops, quizzes, table tennis, pool, air hockey, badminton, computer games and trips off site including ice skating, bowling etc. If you are interested in helping out, contact Sue Mossman on 01977 685868 or 07951 226744, suemossman5@yahoo.co.uk  

 

2008-11-08  Night Marshalls Scheme Up for an Award

The night marshalls scheme, trialled by Selby District Council in various communities including Sherburn, has been short-listed for a regional award in the Improving Lives category at the Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber Awards. The marshalls accompany police as they patrol areas with the potential for alcohol-related disorder on busy Friday and Saturday nights

MP John Grogan has tabled a motion urging the Government to rethink its plan for a third runway at Heathrow airport.Nineteen Labour MPs have backed the motion. 

 

2008-11-02  Help Wanted at Sherburn Fellowship

A new female helper is needed at Sherburn St Wilfrid's and St Mary's Youth Fellowship, which meets on Saturdays, 7 to 9pm, once a fortnight during term times for eight to 16-year-olds. Contact Alison on 01977 682450 if interested.

2008-10-28  Building Site Eyesore in Sherburn

FED-UP residents in Sherburn are fighting to make a leading building company clean up what they claim is an eyesore. They say the blot on the landscape near the Eversley Park Centre is reverting back to its former state as a nature reserve after Persimmon Homes downed tools. The site had been earmarked for a housing development but the credit crunch hasforced builders to postpone building plans. Persimmon is now talking about three years plus before work is started. 

 

2008-10-26  Town Meeting in Sherburn

The Renaissance team is holding a town meeting at the Elmete Social Club, Sherburn onWednesday, 29th October 7 to 9pm. It's hoped the team will be able to finalise the choices for the clock face, and there will be a discussion of the village design statement. The design statement will act as a guideline for any future development in Sherburn, and residents are encouraged to attend and give their input.
